Elder Care Groups

Elder Care Groups aim to address social isolation among older people and have a strong emphasis on all aspects of health and wellbeing, including spiritual wellbeing.

For over 65s who may be living alone or have limited opportunity to get out and about, Elder Care Groups provide companionship, fun, advice and support.

The groups run for a half day each week, include morning or afternoon tea, and offer programmes of exercise, fun and friendship, social connection and other activities focussed on well-being and healthy living.  The programmes include morning or afternoon tea all at a minimal $3 koha per guest. On occasion, we organise outings and excursions too.  Transport may also be available.

The staff and volunteers are trained in the needs of older people and are alert to the challenges faced by people in our current social environment.

Elder Care Groups operate in partnership with the churches they are held in and are based on the model first developed by the Selwyn Foundation (Auckland). The Groups operate through the Christchurch City Mission Elder Care Project.

Volunteers Welcome

Our volunteers greatly enjoy their experience at the Groups too. If you have an hour or two weekly or fortnightly to spend with our guests or help with transport, we would love to hear from you.

Group Details:

There are currently nine groups operating in the Christchurch area, one in Woodend, one in Timaru, and one in Temuka. We have focused on small groups of 12-18 guests – so that a high level of individual care can be offered.

Please note we have capacity limits so book your attendance by email at eldercare@citymission.org.nz or by telephone on 021 776302.
